After TAP Air Portugal's Ponta Delgada-named Boeing 737 made its maiden flight between Horta and Lisbon in 1985, nearly two decades after the airport's 1971 opening, the route became a regular service.
Airport concessions to serve civil aviation was awarded to ANA Aeroportos de Portugal in 1998, along with those of Lisbon, Porto, Faro, Flores, Santa Maria, Ponta Delgada, and Beja. ANA was also free to design and build brand-new infrastructure as part of this concession.
After renovations in 2001, the airport became an international hub. Horta Airport's passenger and cargo traffic has risen despite the airport's seasonal pattern of activity and airline movements. The airport was able to monitor the Central Group and the Western Group of islands, including Flores and Corvo, after the 2011 opening of a renovated control tower.
Air traffic controllers now have more room to operate thanks to installing a Wide Area Multilateration (WAM) system in the enlarged tower, which monitors planes approaching the islands of Pico, So Jorge, and Graciosa.
Aircraft can land in low cloud cover or bad visibility thanks to satellite technology that airport officials announced at the opening ceremony. Both ends of the runway would get brand-new systems in 2012.
